Commemoration of the Somme – July 1st 2016

Summer-Newsletter-01The Bishop of Huddersfield led the service of Commemoration with the Deputy Lord Lieutenant, Squadron Leader David Dinmore, Mayor of Kirklees Cllr Jim Dodds, Huddersfield Army Veterans, the Royal British Legion, the Sea Cadets and local school children.

At the service the Mayor blew a whistle and a Huddersfield veteran with two school pupils laid a poppy at the foot of the sculpture. This was done 20 times. Each poppy laid represented 1000 soldiers who were killed on the first day of the Somme. 1st July 1916. Robert Huntress Tolson was one of these soldiers. His brother James was killed in the last months of this war.

Tolson Memorial Museum – the future in your hands

Tolson Museum is the museum of Huddersfield. It is under threat.

The house and park were given to the people of Huddersfield by Legh Tolson. Dr Woodhead, curator, amassed a collection showing the history of the people of Huddersfield and its nature and geology. This is for all to access, particularly local people, in perpetuity.

This house is part of our history. It was build by a man from humble beginnings. He was a weaver who through his creative skills and application became rich enough to have this ‘brass castle’ built. In this building for all to see are artefacts that remind us of the skills and creativeness of the people of Huddersfield.

The future of Tolson Museum is in the balance. However all is not lost. Your view is crucial. If you are passionate about it’s future please , please go online and fill in the questionnaire. www.kirkleestalk.org. This has to be done by Sunday 24th July.
