‘We will remember them’
This autumn we will unveil a ‘There but not There’ sculpture at Tolson Memorial Museum. This has been purchased by the ‘Friends’. These 6ft tall aluminium-framed silhouettes are being made by the charity ‘Remembered’, the profits from the sales going to six military related charities.
These silhouettes are appearing throughout the country. At the event we will reflect on the effect that the war had on the people of Huddersfield. We have learnt, from the book by local author the late Margret Stansfield, that 3,439 service personnel died during the war and a further 130 died in the following three years from the effects of the war. This of course does not take into account the effects on the families of those who went through this conflict and the deprivations of many who were at home. We are holding the ‘unveiling’ on Saturday 20th October.
James Tolson aged 20 died on 20th October 1918. His brother Robert had been killed at the Battle of the Somme in 1916. In Huddersfield there are many memorials commemorating those who had given their lives, but none on the scale of the gift by Legh Tolson. He gave his home and estate to the people of Huddersfield, in memory of his two nephews Robert and James Tolson.
Summer in the Heritage Memorial Garden
We have had wonderful support for our events in the Garden this summer. We have had Colne Valley Big Band and Emley Brass Band. In the last couple of months we have had the New Orleans Wiggle and the White Rose Morris Men, both of whom encouraged audience participation – of all ages. Great fun.
We have a full programme of events this autumn, starting with the Motorbike Show on Sunday 9th September. Please note the next Tea & Cake meeting is 12th September.
