Summer in the Garden 2018
From May to September this year we have music or theatre in the Heritage Memorial Garden. We started our programme with Kirkleesmusica entertaining us in May. This was followed in June by Emley Brass Band. We now have a gazebo to shelter the players. This was a real boon on a very hot Sunday afternoon. In July we have the Wiggle Jazz Band. In August we go really traditional with the Morris Dancers. In September we welcome back the Mikron Theatre who are entertaining us with ‘Revolting Women.’ a play about lesser known suffragettes—not to be missed!
The AGM
Now don’t let your eyes glaze over, I know an AGM is not a very exciting event, but it does give the committee an opportunity to look at their achievements over the year, and focus on what they want to do in the coming year.
We agreed that T&C meetings on the second Wednesday afternoon in the month are very well supported and we have a full programme for the coming year.
The 5th Motorbike Show, part of the Heritage Weekend, will feature a ‘panther’.
Our Victorian Christmas Fair was a success with the stunning Father Christmas Grotto. Stalls are already being booked for the next one on 17th November.
A new event is planned. ‘Weavers Work.’ will be a day to celebrate the importance of the textile industry in Huddersfield. Spinning and weaver will be demonstrated. Students of Huddersfield University will demonstrate their work. Keen to give a complete picture of the process of cloth making a committee member is try to source some sheep!
On a different note , Robert Tolson aged 18, died on 20th October 1918. We are having events on Saturday 20th October to commemorate his death.

Beautiful Fabric designed by William Etchells
This is described as one of the choicest designs by William Etchells. It was made to demonstrate what can be produced on a Jaquard Loom. The loom had a ‘punch hole card’ process that made the creation of very complex patterns possible. Fabrics such as this were exhibited at the Great Exhibition of 1852. Mills throughout Huddersfield developed their ability to produce such cloth during the 19th and 20th Centuries. Most mills have now gone but fine quality cloth is still being made in Huddersfield. Samples of fabrics of this quality are in the textile room in Tolson Museum.
Help – Wanted
- Secretary. The ‘Friends’ meet on the 3rd Sunday afternoon once a month for approx. 2 hours. Secretary needed to take notes at the meeting and type into a computer.
- Help with refreshments. Commitment is about 3 hours on the occasional Sunday afternoon.
- Gardening. We meet in the Heritage Memorial Garden 10—11.30 am Saturday morning twice a month in the growing season. Refreshments.
