A Happy New Year to all our Friends and supporters
The ‘Friends’ have had a busy Christmas with the successful Victorian Christmas Fair and a full house for the Carols in the Garden. The latter however did not happen in the Garden. The afternoon was a little too damp for a keyboard to be used outside so we went into the Woodhead Hall.
A full programme of speakers and activities for 2018 has been prepared for the Tea and Cake group. This continues to meet on the 2nd Wednesday of the month at 2pm in the Woodhead Hall in Tolson Museum. The Museum now opens only at the weekend for visits by the public, but for booked meetings such as the Tea & Cake group, schools visits and other private meetings it is open.
The ‘Friends’ events are now well attended and successful. This is wonderful but of course does stretch the resources of the ‘Friends’ committee. Can you give a couple of hours occasionally to help? I was going to put up some posters at the Victorian Christmas Fair asking for volunteers but ran out of time to get them done! There are lots of jobs where the offer of a bit of time occasionally would really help us. Please email me or give me a ring if you want to know more.
The colours of the edges of this newsletter are called ‘crocus’. This reminds me that, although I am looking out over snow, spring is not far away and we will soon be enjoying working in the Heritage Memorial Garden. Saturday morning seems to be the time that suits those of us who like gardening and we meet on 2nd and 4th Saturdays. The next meeting will be 10am Saturday 10th March, as always weather permitting. Refreshments served.

Spell, Pommel and Knurr
Come and see the Spell, Pommel and Knurr in your Tolson Museum.
It was a very popular game in this area, with money won and lost on the results. The spell is the wooden board with a spring loaded cup at the end. The board has wooden spikes pressed into the ground to secure it. The knurr or nut is the ball. The pommel is the stick to release the spring and hit the knurr as it rises into the air. The aim was to hit the knurr as far as possible. It was played locally until the 1950’s.
