Tolson Memorial Museum – The Consultation

First, thanks to all of you who completed ‘Future of Kirklees Museums & Galleries Survey’. We are also very encouraged by the numerous letters of support from individuals and organisations that continue to appear in the Examiner.

In response to the proposed Kirklees Cultural Vision, a paper was prepared and presented to Huddersfield District Committee and at the consultation meeting in Tolson Museum. This response will be taken into account with the results of the survey.

From Kirklees Cultural Vision we learned there is a proposal to put the contents of both the Huddersfield Art Gallery and the Tolson Museum into one new building in Huddersfield. In our response we emphasised that the ‘Tolson’ building is part of our heritage and should continue to be the Museum. We argued that the contents of the Art Gallery could easily be housed in the Stables that are adjacent to Tolson.

We maintain that Tolson is close to the centre of Huddersfield and, of course, is in a lovely setting and would make a stunning art and history centre with restaurant. One reason for the proposal to close the Tolson Museum was the cost of repairing the building and making it watertight. We believe that a new building will almost certainly cost more.

In our response we also demonstrated that the ‘Friends’ work, which we detailed, support the KMC vision of ‘supporting communities to do more for themselves and each other’.

The decision will be made by Kirklees Cabinet in September. The Cabinet will decide probably at the next Kirklees Cabinet meeting on Wednesday 20th September.
