The Gardening Club first met on 28th February in Tolson Museum and we had a very constructive and enjoyable meeting.
We agreed to meet regularly to work on the Heritage Memorial Garden. Pupils from Netherhall Academy and King James High School are already working on two of the community gardens. The Sea Cadets are working on the main body of the Garden. We agreed to support the young people and work on the third community garden. Any spare gardening tools that we have we agreed we would bring to the next meeting and donate for use in the Garden. Further tools for the work are to be bought. All these tools will to be kept locked in a hut on the adjacent bowling green. As a club we also plan to have plant swaps, have a plants stall at an event and invite experts to our meetings.
A bunch of snowdrops with roots were brought to the meeting and these were planted when we finished.
We felt we needed more information about some of the plants in the garden so agreed that a Kirklees Officer be invited to come to a meeting. We agreed to meet 24th March.
Update on Gardening Club.
Maryke Woods, Kirklees officer joined us and among other things, we were able to report our concerns about the state of the ‘all weather play area’, the skateboard pond and the lack of litter bins in the Park. We were also concerned about access to water.
Our following meeting was on 16th April. We planted grass seed and worked clearing weeds. The following day we laid some turf at the entrance.
To identify volunteers in the Garden we ordered jackets to wear whilst working in the Garden.
Some Sea Cadets came to work in the Garden on 18th April and 2nd May and pupils from King James High School and Netherall Academy came on 7th May. They all worked hard to get the Garden tidy for the Dedication on 10th May.
Netherall pupils have agreed dates on which they will come to work in the garden in June and July and the Sea Cadets have given dates when they will work in the Garden this summer.
The ‘Friends’ Gardening Club have now have settled to meeting at 2pm – 3.30pm on 2nd Thursday and 4th Thursday afternoon each month for the summer. If you love gardening and want to support the work of the ‘Friends of Tolson & Ravensknowle’ come and join us.
