Autumn Programme in the Garden

Surely this is the most topical of the items in the Transport Gallery at the moment. Even those, like me, who know nothing about football, cannot fail to be impressed by the success of Huddersfield Town. This Huddersfield Town nameplate was on a railway engine of the London & North Eastern Company. A series of engines were built in Darlington in 1936 and were all named after football teams that were in the football 1st division at the time. Sadly you would have been unlikely to have seen this engine as it was used to pull carriages in the East Anglian Region. This is part of the collection of railway items on loan from the Huddersfield Railway Circle.

The Friends Autumn Programme starts with our annual Motorcycle Show from 11am on Sunday 10th September. This time, thanks for a generous donation, we will have a large marquee where we will have a range of craft and charity stalls. The following Saturday, at 12.pm, we once again have Mikron Theatre. They are performing their show ’In at the deep end’ . This play is a story about the Royal National Lifeboat Institute. This is of particular interest in Huddersfield as the people of Huddersfield have over the years raised money for three lifeboats. The first one that money was raised for was the Happisburg Lifeboat in 1866.

The Wednesday afternoon Tea & Cake group’s next meeting is on 13th September. It is a change to the published programme. It will be a Tour of the Museum followed by a discussion of what we think of as the most interesting items we have seen. The T&C meeting in August was a joint meeting with the Croquet Group, pictured here.

Good News

There are to be improvements to the entrance and café area in Tolson Museum.

As a result of the work the museum will be closed from 18th September to 21st October.

However, the Woodhead Hall will still be available so the Tea & Cake meeting on 11th October will take place.
